finding a grave

I sent an e-mail to Aberdeen City Council regarding the whereabouts of my grandad's grave. I did know which cemetery in Aberdeen he had been buried and the date of his death. Less than 48 hours later, I had a reply with the grave number and section it was in and a request for my address so that they could send me a map of the cemetery. I did that and less than a week from my first e-mail I had the map too. And it cost the big sum of £0.00!! I didn't even have to pay postage. Now that's what I call good service. Liz

Julie - if you post the person's name, area and rough dates I'll check on the burial index for you. There are a lot of gaps but you never know, you may be lucky.

Hi Sam, I think that the prices that are being charged to get info to do this as a hobby is getting out of hand I think like you say I will have to do some foot work ...happy hunting!

Hi Julie, I think it differs from Council to Council. I recently looked up the burials of some of my ancestors up in the burial registers myself as they are available at Stoke Archives. I then wrote to the council, giving them dates of burial, grave plot numbers names and everything, I wanted to know where the graves were located in the actual cemetery. They wrote back saying there would be a charge of £65!! I was gobsmacked as I have had this info previously for free. Needless to say I haven't paid, I would rather spend hours trawling round the cemetery myself, at least I know which one they are in! Sam x

hi julie i too had luck with the local council. i called the cemetery division and told them what i was looking for they rang me back later with two graves and emailed me the missing one the day after. i also had been given wrong dates. its well worth a try and didnt cost me a penny. when i found the graves and who was buried in them it broke down some brick walls and added about 6 other people to my tree as well as confirming dates and names. give it a go good luck love linda x

When I was looking for my g. grandparents graves ( I only knew the town, not the cemetery they were buried in), I rang the local council and they were very helpful in locating the graves for me, They even searched 3 years either side as I had beem given the wrong date! It's definitely worth a try Christine

Hi Julie I would like to know too!! All I have found out by myself is that if they were buried in a council owned cemetery, then if you contact the council they may do a quick search for you if you are lucky. Otherwise I guess it means searching all the local churchyards! :0) Joan
