Hi ALL This may sound really silly, but is there a limit to how many people you put in a tree ,should you just stop when youve done as much as you can on your direct line or do you carry on with the ones that branch of. The reason i ask is that ive only been doing this a few weeks and with a lot of help from this board and some of my own work i seem to be gathering quite a few names.Today i received an email with info on my paternal grandmother going back to 1750 which is great but there are so many diffrent names there now im not sure if im supposed to carry on with these as well ,if you know what i mean.I really am enjoying it and you certainly do get hooked. Sorry just realised that someone asked the same question a little while ago, shouldve read the posts first. First thing im going to do now is fill in the death dates though, dont usually look for them, always think ill do that later. Dont make a note of ref num either {will now}though i do look up and confirm information that anyone gives me. |

Hi Joy, Opinion varies. Some like a large tree with little info, others have a small tree with loads of information on the people contained. It is really a matter of personal taste/opinion, do what feels right for you, its your tree! |

Joy Never throw away any information! What seems overwhelming and unnecessary today will be of burning interest in a month's time! As you have said you are new to this I hope you won't mind me saying - you MUST verify everything yourself. 'Looking it up' is no good. You need certs, at least for your direct line. If your informant hasn't got them, then they too have done a 'look up' tree on the internet, and it is therefore a GUESS, unless the names are unique. It may well be perfectly correct - but you cannot know that till you have the certs. Anyone on here will tell you that there are some very nasty surprises concealed in certificates. You do right to 'kill them off' though - that is one of the first things you should do, before trying to go back. No point in looking endlessly for your Percy Stubbs marriage, if he died aged 2. Good luck. OC |
