George Stephenson born c. 1822 in Wymondham,Norfolk (81 in 1901,70 in 1891…) Wife- Jane born c.1822in Milborne Port, Somerset/Dorset (depending on which census you choose) Their first son, also George born 1851 in Battle, Sussex (from census info) Rest of children born Cardiff Family at 30 Alice St., Cardiff in 1871,1881,1891,1901(old timers moved a few doors up) BUT… I can’t find them for 1861,51,41 I can’t find births for George snr, or George jnr? I can’t find the marriage (I accept there might not be one)so can’t go back for Jane’s birth- but with the 2 of them coming from such different counties & 1st child born different county again, where to look ? I’ve tried Ancestry and IGI till I’m going crosseyed!

I've tried looking for them in the 1861 census on Ancestry. Alice Street is in the parish of Cardiff St Mary, enumeration district 17, but when you look at the very last image (no. 56) for that district, Alice Street just stops at house number 7. No statement at the bottom of the page saying this is the end of the enumeration district. So, it looks like the pages with the rest of Alice Street on them are missing, unfortunately. Chris

Thanks for that- never thought to check that way Any ideas on why I can't find births tho? Surely they can't have got both father AND son's birthplace wrong on all those censuses??!

Might this be George jnr's birth Name: George Stepheson Year of Registration: 1852 Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar District: Battle County: Sussex, East Sussex Volume: 2b Page: 41 It has been transcribed correctly so if he is Stephenson the index is wrong

Andrea, thanks very much, I'll investigate this one, sounds possible doesn't it? Thought I'd tried all the mispells but obviously not. Reckon it is him- the original is slap bang in the middle of a list of StepheNsons, think the scribe was distracted?! Got to stop for tonight, before I start snoring Thanks you two
