Maid Marion - His father was also Benjamin Hipwell and mother was Ann Farn. I have searched under the name Farn for him. I do have that entry on the 1881 census and it is indeed his father with his second wife and her daughter. Olde Crone - The nearest workhouse would be the Rugby Union Workhouse - unfortunatley Warwick CRO say that the admittance / discharge registers have not survived. I have checked the 1881 census for Rugby Workhouse and he isn't there. Now you have confirmed that the Guardians would've got involved it may be worth me checking the Guardians Minutes. Heather - an Industrial School could be a possibility - there again I think the Poor Law Guardians minutes may hold a clue as to where he was sent. I now think I know where I need to look to try and track him down. Many thanks for all your help. Angela |

I guess its always possible the boy was sent to an Industrial school, which may be anywhere in the country. |

Angela Yes, the Poor Law Guardians would have stepped in. However, this does not mean the children went to the Workhouse, necessarily, although that would be a good place to start, for records. As one of the girls went to her sister there may have been an outrelief payment - again attached to the Poor Law records. Can you identify the nearest workhouse? Incidentally, the Guardians would not have needed a court case to deal with the children - things were much less formal then - they would just take the children. OC |

Hi Marion His name was Benjamin Hipwell B. 1866 Rugby. I didn't put his name because there has been lots of searching to no avail. - apart from 1871 & 1901( mistranscribed as Benjamin Benhipnell) but I guess you never know.... Thanks anyway Angela |

Gt Gt Grandmother died 1874 Rugby - of alcoholism and had been living in extreme poverty (as per inquest report Rugby Advertiser) leaving three children ( two girls aged 10 yrs & 5 yrs and one boy aged 8 yrs) who were still living at home. She and her husband (also father of the children) had been seperated for several months at the time. The judge at the inquest commented on how healthy the deceased's husbands dog looked in comparrison to his children. So the burning question is what happened next ? Would the guardians of the poor law have stepped in ? Would this involve another court case? Many Thanks for any replies - I will be out now till about 3 p.m. N.B. I have traced the rest of the family in 1881 except for the boy (my gt grandfather - who does not re-appear until 1901)The eldest girl was married and the youngest living with an older sister in London. The searches have been extensive -including finding marriages for his sisters etc etc. and a few other people have searched aswell - to no avail. |
