Hi can anyone please tell me if Janet was used as a sort of nickname for someone born with a different Christian name. e.g. Born Elizabeth called Janet. No she was not given a second name. Thanks Gordon

Sometimes people are named as one name but known by another and after a time their 'real' name is forgotten or only used for official documents. Helena

Elizabeth

Just a few days ago a Scottish relative named and baptised Janet became Jessie as she became older. My great-great-grandmother Isabella appears as Bella on the 1891 census.

Helena

I think it may also be a name on its own but can't be certain. Helena

Thank you Michael for your list it will be very useful not only to me but a lot of others on here. I have an ancestor listed as Janet on her daughters OPR image (1792) and on the 1841 census but finding her birth is proving impossible. I remembered once seeing someone had found their Janet under a diferent name. Thanks again Gordon

Hilary

Hi, try looking for the names of Janette & Jeanette. Janet sometimes used in Scotland for these 2 names. Also anyone in Scotland called Ian could be a John, Ian is Gaelic for John. Only found this out last year when I went to my cousin's funeral up in Scotland, always knew him as Ian but vicar read out John. Apparently his real name was John but always called Ian. Hope this helps. Hilary.

I forgot another (obvious) one: In my family Elizabeth became 'Bessie' on the census.

Thank you Hillary and Elizabeth. Jeannette and Janette how obvious I never thought of those. Doh. Perhaps we should start a theme for names
