There's a searchable index on line for marriages up to 1931 on this site: http://search.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/sn-2559FFF/gbsearch/Marriages If you find what you're looking for there and can provide me with the reference, I'll check it for you at Vancouver Public Library - they have microfilm records. Thanks for the information.I know they married in Vancouver in 1912. I was hoping the certificate would give me the father's names. heather |

First, it is most important to know the province or territory in which the couple were married. BMDs are held provincially or territorially. Secondly, not all provinces have their registrations online, and the disclosure restrictions are different for different provinces because those privacy laws are provincial. Thirdly, unless you need it for legal purposes, go for the BMD registration and not the certificate. It is much cheaper and gives you a whole lot more information. This site should give you a pretty good start. http://www3.sympatico.ca/bkinnon/cangenealogy2.htm A few local knowledge tips: 1. If your ancestors got married in a church that was not of their denomination, it probably wasn't because of an major theological conversion. This is a young, really vast country and it was probably the only thing built nearby. 2. Remember that our records do not go back anything like as far back as the UK. Keep in mind how long the province has been in the federation. Canada was confederated in 1867, but then that was only New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario (Upper Canada) and Quebec (Lower Canada). Other provinces followed variously later, with Newfoundland joining in 1949. Nunavut came into being in 1999. Happy hunting, Penny in Canada |
