On the 1841 census my relative - William Mainwaring born 1785 residing in Lancashire - is shown as not born in that county. Can anyone advise me as to what I can do next to get further back, many thanks Sue

Does he turn up in 1851 with a place of birth? Dont take the not county or of county info as hard fact - Im sure a lot of people just ticked any old box as Ive found lots of mine with totally wrong info on 1841.

Heather, unfortunately I can't find any of the family in 1851. I have found some of his children in 1861 but I think he would be dead by then. Sue

Sorry Sue I thought Rebecca was born outside the county but taking a second look at the 1841 census it's a Y not a N. Georgina.

Hi Georgina, yes that is his daughter. The children were all born in salford,Manchester but he was from outside lancashire. I am trying to find out if there is anything you can do when faced with this sort of brick wall. Could you tell me what IGI is? Thanks Sue

Sue the IGI is the International Genealogical Index, this is a collection of parish records that the Mormon church gathered from around the world and it is free to search at ... www.familysearch.org It is far from complete because many parishes refused them access to their records, also beware of submitted entries because they have many mistakes, it is best to use it as a guide. Thanks Georgina I have looked at this site before, didn't know it as IGI. I guess I'll have to draw a line under William, as I'm really stuck as to what to do. Ho hum. Sue

Guess you have looked for their death regs? When did Salford become Liverpool anyone? As there is a Wm Mainwaring dying Liverpool 1842 I think on freebmd.
