wording on marriage cert.

thanx to everyone for their help with my grandfathers marriage certificate and to sue for deciphering the word-at least I can uncross my eyes now!!!!

The entire certificate has been completed by the same person because it is a copy of the register, not of the original. This is perfectly normal. If there is something under one of the father's names it is most likely to be (Decd) Conversely if there is nothing there it does not mean the father was still alive. Remember that the registrar only wrote down what he was told. At the bottom of the certificate is the space for the signatures of the couple and the witnesses. X means that they made a mark on the original because they were unable to sign. The person writing out the entry on the register copies exactly what was on the original in their own handwriting, including signatures. and X's

Thanks for that. The whole of the certificate looks like it has been filled in by the same person and underneath the name of my Grandads dad is something in brackets and then a cross by his name but the name of my grandmothers dad doesn't have anything by it although it looks like it has been completed by the same person as the one who filled in the whole of the form. Does this mean both fathers were deceased\?

Your father's signature only appears on the marriage cert if he was a witness to your wedding. If the confusion is in the space for 'name and profession of father' then either the registrar or the vicar (or the copying clerk)wrote that bit, not the father. OC

Could it be 'his mark'??? In other words .............. he couldn't write, made an x, and someone wrote that beneath. I've had that on certificates for brides, grooms, fathers, and witnesses!!!

thanks for your help, I have 'blown' up the word and think it could be deceased as you say, cant think what else it would say.

Does anyone know what information would be added underneath a fathers name on a marriage certificate and why would a name have a cross by it? I'm having trouble deciphering a word in brackets under a name , think it could be deceased but not sure and there is a cross by the same name, could this be because the person couldn't write or because he was deceased? I'm going cross eyed trying to make it out!!!
