I’ve lived in Canada for a while now and also have never heard of this. The individual provinces are responsible for keeping the records. I do know that in BC, copies of BMDs are held at some of the larger libraries as I’ve looked up quite a few for other people at Vancouver Public Library. Jenny |

I live in Canada, and have for almost 40 years, but I don't have any ancestors here so I haven't really needed to do any genealogy searches here. I don't know whether universities hold the records, but there are loads of universities! It could possibly be that some archiveal material has been moved to university archives, but I very much doubt it. I do know that each province is responsible for holding the records for that province, so you have to search province by province. eg. Ontario records, Alberta records, and so on. Just put the province and government records in your search engine and you should get to the right place (eg. 'Ontario government records' or 'Ontario genealogy'). Good luck! |

Reg, Yes I have, to a degree (excuse the pun) but I'm not familiar with Canadian Universities. Researching America and Canada is new to me. From my understanding they do not (like Britain) have a general registration. Maybe I'm wrong - I'm still learning. M. Steer |

That records of BMD's are often associated with universities in the relevant province? If so, are any of them accessible 'on-line'? Thanks, M. Steer |
