can anyone tell me how to find out what regiment my rellies was in this is what i have in the 1851 census sead st marys barracks,chatham,kent,gillington,district 2nd henry mclaughlin age 38 private soldier born ireland bridget 34 born ireland mary age 15 american british subject elizabeth 10 american british subject ellen 7 american british subject ann 4 born brompton,kent henry 2 brompton kent also was it possable he was sreving in american thank you for any help no matter how small joyce

Hello Joyce I have seen replies on here giving lists of places served by particular regiments...so it may be possible to do a reverse search, ie. decide on the regiment by the time and places of army service. If all the children are Henry's, it would seem that he returned to England between the births of Ellen and Ann. Try putting something in your title, which will alert people who know about military matters. Good luck, Gwyn

I'm at work at the moment so I can't stop to look it up, but the website you want is I think called regiments.org If you are able to view the 1851 census page, see if you can scroll back to the beginning of that section, as it may actually tell you the regiment or unit.

There were soldiers from lots of different regiments in Gillingham at that time. You could always try searching the Parish Records for the youngest children's baptisms in the hope that they were C of E, they usually state the Father's Regiment. I have already looked in the Garrison Church for you, up to the end of 1850, with no luck. I have to go out, so do not have time to look at the other records, I suggest you firstly look at Gillingham St. Mary Magdelene PRs on the following website. http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/ Jennifer

well spotted Reg........see a bit of lateral thinking goes a long way. A provisional Battalion was organised at Chatham in 1834 as the East India Company Depot ....in 1857 this was reorganised to into 2nd Battalion and 3rd Battalion. the closest ive seen is royal east kent (duke of connaught ) regiment but there is no definite link to any specific regiment to chatham with an irish label...my guess is that they were brought in to send to india as cannon fodder...things were getting tense over there -this was just before the uprising.

just had alook at irish regiments and theres 69th new york but with irish amercians,so i wonder if he signed up over in the usa or came from ireland,what do you think that was in 1851 joyce

I don't no which regiment he would be in but looking at the rank of a couple of soldiers they are down as Serjeant this way of spelling the rank would suggest that it is a light infantry regiment, most other regiments spell the rank with a letter ( g ) and not a letter ( j ) is normaly for light division, eg, 1st Battalion Light infantry and 1st battalion Royal green jacket are light division and the rank would be spelt with a (j) Duke of wellington's and Green howards the rank would be spelt with a (g) If you go to the link below their are some very good members that would probably no the answer to your question http://1914-1918.invisionzone.*com/forums/ remove * from address Roy
