Marcia I have been investigating my Grandmother's birth that took place in Egypt in 1889, baptised at the Cairo Citadel, together with her parent's marriage as without GGrandmother's maiden name I can't go back any further on that line. Neither event are in the GRO overseas index so I contacted the British Embassy in Cairo. They will TRY to to trace the certificates in their records if they were consularly registered at that time, if not they can request certified copies from the local authorities. But here is the bad news.... For each search in the Consular records £41 and £41 for each certified copy if a record is found. If they need to go to the local authority then it is £84.50 for each search and certificate. So if they don't find the record 'in house' and they have to go to the local authority and then find the record.......£125.50!!!! Never again will I moan about the £7 GRO charge :))) I only learnt this week that the mother's maiden name isn't usually shown on a birth cert so I at least have my search costs narrowed to a marriage :) Hope this helps Chris

Marcia, have you tried *find my past*? It has forces abroad BMD. I have found my own birth, and my fathers cousins marriage in Jerusalem (I bought the certificate through GRO!). I also found his death...killed in action. Worth a try. Good luck with it. Deanna X
