Barbara that is her first marriage to William Milton, they are together on 1871 census then on 1881 he is with 2nd wife although they didnt marry til 1891 just said they were married. Lavinia cant find anything on so could be her that reappears on 1881 as Lavinia Croot just need to find the marriage to confirm it as death cert wont give her other names I dont think

1881 census has a William Croot married to a Lavinia with offspring William George and Lucy Ellen. Living in Honiton Devon...... Croot is a pretty unusual name - as is Lavinia. Sure it's not them....? J.

Andrea in a word NO mine was Lavinia Gatting then Married a Milton in 1875 and appears as Milton with him on 1881 census by 1891 census her first husband has a 2nd wife and children or called her his wife didnt marry til after 1891 why, did he wait til Lavinia was dead and he was legally allowed to. 1881 William Croot is single 1891 he has Lavinia as his wife she dies 1891 1901 William is on his own again. The birthdate and area of birth for Lavinia Croot is the same as our Lavinia. All guess work but is the only possible one we have for right age and area of our Lavinia. If I could find that marriage then I could rule it in or out.

If William Milton didn't remarry while his first wife was still alive then Lavinia couldn't have remarried because William was alive. So is she on the census as 'wife' to William Croot just as William Milton has a 'wife'? If everyone thought she was William Croot's wife then her death could well have been registered as such.
