Does anyone know where I can find out what London Exchange a street came under? I've got Sutherland Street in Pimlico, but I need to find out what exchange that would be. (like TOT was Tottenham) |

There's no easy way of relating telephone exchange names (pre-all-figure numbering) to particular streets. You can do it by rough areas, though you will find more than one exchange name in a particular area. One name could have up to 10,000 numbers, so there were several cases where there was more than one 10,000 line exchange co-located in a building. GERrard and REGent exchanges were in the same building, as were HOLborn and CHAncery. By examining the old phone books on Ancestry, you can get a feel for which exchange was where. |
