My ancester Edward Lee born around 1858 in Hull yorkshire does not appear on the census records until 1881 when he seems to be living with his sister in law Elizabeth and then in 1891 when he is married to Georgina ,any one any ideas as to how I can find him before that? |

Gail has gone to take the dog for a walk, but says have you got his marriage certificate, it will have his fathers name on, maybe we can trace him by that. |

Hi I haven't sent for the certificate yet because I was having trouble tracing him. I have my Grandfathers birth certificate showing Edward Lee as his father and his marriage certificate with his father as Edward Lee agian but it also has something written underneath his name and I'm not sure what that could be-could be deceased.Anyway I will send for the birth and marriage certificate of my g grandfather and take it from there. Hope Gail and the dog had a good walk, thanks for your help and I'll let you know how I get on. |

Angela, I have relatives named Edwin/Edward. Seems to change according to the census. I was helping someone yesterday to trace a birth for her Edward and he was under Edwin. Rose |

Hi Rose Thanks for that, thats an interesting point, maybe this is the Edward/Edwin I am looking for as the dob and place of birth add up as well as some of his sibling family names seem to appear in his own childrens names when he got maried, my only concern is how I actually verify all this because if I send for ceertificates its still not conclusive that he changed his name is it? Is there anyway to find out about a change of name or was it just something that was done unofficially years ago - everything seemed more laid back when it came to registering etc. angie |

The marriage and birth certificates would confirm the father. In the few cases I've seen it seems the child was named Edwin but later went on to be called Edward. Maybe it was just a preference or perhaps there was some notorious character around then called Edwin and men changed their names to Edward. Who knows? Rose |
