For all those that helped me and like to know what eventually happened............. Elizabeth's maiden name was Evans. I got this from one of the children's birth cert. I am inclined to Fiona's thoughts and will now spend a fortune checking this out! LOL Gerry :-))

Brother-in-law doesn't indicate whether he is the wife's brother or the husband of a sister of the head of the household. So Marriott is not necessarily the maiden name of the wife. Also in the 1800s and earlier, 'in-law' was often used instead of 'step' so he could be a step-brother of the head of the household. Regards Lesley Instone

Hi Gerry, not so sure Peter BIL is a red herring, here's Peter in 1851. Name: Peter Evans Marriott Age: 1 Estimated birth year: abt 1850 Relation: Son Father's name: William Mother's name: Susannah Gender: Male Where born: Sutton IN Ashfd, Nottinghamshire, England Civil parish: Sutton IN Ashfield County/Island: Nottinghamshire Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: Disability: View image Registration district: Mansfield Sub-registration district: Warsop ED, institution, or vessel: 1c Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 67 Household Members: Name Age James Cartledge 21 Sarah Cartledge 17 Thos Clarke 91 Joseph Marriott 10 Peter Evans Marriott 1 Sarah Evans Marriott 4 Susannah Marriott 30 William Marriott 39 Joseph Marriott abt 1841 Sutton IN Ashfd, Nottinghamshire, England Nephew Sutton IN Ashfield Nottinghamshire Peter Evans Marriott abt 1850 Sutton IN Ashfd, Nottinghamshire, England Son Sutton IN Ashfield Nottinghamshire Sarah Evans Marriott abt 1847 Sutton IN Ashfd, Nottinghamshire, England Daughter Sutton IN Ashfield Nottinghamshire Susannah Marriott abt 1821 Sutton IN Ashfd, Nottinghamshire, England Wife Sutton IN Ashfield Nottinghamshire William Marriott abt 1812 Sutton IN Ashfd, Nottinghamshire, England Head Sutton IN Ashfield Nottinghamshire Sarah and Peter both have Evans as middle name, as yet I have not found a marriage to confirm Susannah's maiden name is Evans. Living next door to them is this family, note grandaughter Elizabeth Evans living with them. Just a theory but marybe Elizabeth Evans is the daughter of Susannah before she married Mr Marriott and therefore half sister to Peter Marriott which would make him William Wright's brother-in-law. Also the fact that Susannah called two of her children Sarah and Peter have drawn me to this family. Carr Evans abt 1831 Sutton IN Ashfd, Nottinghamshire, England Son Sutton IN Ashfield Nottinghamshire Elizabeth Evans abt 1845 Sutton IN Ashfd, Nottinghamshire, England Granddaughter Sutton IN Ashfield Nottinghamshire John Evans abt 1835 Sutton IN Ashfd, Nottinghamshire, England Son Sutton IN Ashfield Nottinghamshire Peter Evans abt 1794 City, Lincolnshire, England Head Sutton IN Ashfield Nottinghamshire Peter Evans abt 1824 Sutton IN Ashfd, Nottinghamshire, England Son Sutton IN Ashfield Nottinghamshire Sarah Evans abt 1798 Sutton IN Ashfd, Nottinghamshire, England Wife Sutton IN Ashfield Nottinghamshire

Thanks Barabara. It is the family. I am beginning to think the brother in law thing is a bit of a red herring..... Jeanette, thank you too. I have sent for a birth cert for one of the kids to check on Elizabeth's maiden name. Gerry :-))

Ok, Peter is the bro and the sons name, so a good indicator Marriott is right - but say she married before? I know its unlikely but I found a girl marrying at 16 and a widow at 18 recently - which threw me for a marriage! Oops, just seen the above message. May be Peter is the hubby of another sister of the head?

William Wright abt 1842) and Elizabeth Marriott (abt 1843), married I reckon, somewhere between 1858 at very earliest and 1862 when first son Peter was born. William and Elizabeth were both born in Sutton in Ashfield in Notts. In 1871 Census William’s Brother in Law, Peter Marriott was staying with them. It is Peter Marriott that gives me Elizabeth’s surname. However, I cannot find William and Elizabeth’s marriage. Is it me going doolally (whatever that means) or are their records missing? Gerry :-))
