I know I saw something on here before, but didn't save it anywhere! Silly me! What's the most reliable and time-effective way of storing/updating/transferring trees? I'm using GR, TP and FTM - how do I put things in one place, then use that to update the others? And will I lose stuff on Gencom if I add stuff - sorry, I don't understand how it works. Bx |

Just nudged up one thread that might be worth reading. You could always try a search for Gedcom and see what other threads there are on the subject. Maureen |

Do you have FTM is it 2005/06? ? FTM will contain everything you need and you can back it up to a cd and the internet for belt and braces storage. You can also create your own home page free by pressing a few buttons on the FTM program. You can create a ged com from the FTM and simply update the GR tree by importing the new gedcom to GR using the import/export link to the left of this page. You cant lose anything when you create a gedcom you are just copying the work you have, not taking any of it away. |

Heather So I should do it all on FTM, then move to GR? Can I also move it to TP?( As that seems slightly more comprehensive) Bx |

As long as Tribal Pages takes a gedcom, then of course you can! When you create your FTM gedcom ensure you temporarily take out anything you dont want seen on public pages though. |

Yes Barbara. I would deffo suggest doing everything on FTM, which I do,and then 'exporting' the FTM file to GEDCOM which you can upload to both GR and TP. If you do the 'exporting' the FTM to GEDCOM uploading regularly you will keep those files upto date Gerry :-)) |

Thanks to Glitter Baby, for the fantastic thread you nudged up for me - I knew I'd seen it, but put in 'gencom' in the search - doh!! Thanks muchly to Glen, for the thread and info. And thanks Heather, for your patience with us newbies - keep seeing your name and useful advice, but it won't all stay put in my brain - pity I can't 'delete' all the unneccessary stuff I carry around in my noddle, then I'd have room for more! FTM should be your control program, you can do such much with it. I want to see you create a Home Page! |
