I have a friennd who has quite a complicated family history, she dosent actually have her birth certificate and dosent know what name she was registerd as, her DOB is the begining of October we did a search on ancestry and can ony find her name in the bith index for November. Do the indexes show for the DOB or the date of registration of the birth?

Depends what year you are referring to but parents had up to 6 weeks to register. I think since the 80's (correct me if Im wrong people) the actual month of birth is shown but before that it was the quarter.
