I have been looking on IGI for John Ellis, and I found this entry for Riddlesdale/Loker, it used 'Alias' as a variant of 'Ellis'. I am sure there has been a recent thread about these names, but I can't find it. Hopefully this may help somebody. John Riddlesdale alias Loker, born 1/7/1628 in Bocking, Essex, shown as buried on the same day.I can't remember what the mystery was but this may solve it. The father was also John Riddlesdale alias Loker, the mother was Elizabeth Wellocke Riddlesdale alias Loker. Film No 178110, page no 275, ref no 8983. Hope this helps whoever the originator was. Duncan is the record you found a submitted or an extracted entry? We found the entries the other day for this man but they were all submitted by a member of the LDS church and when you get back to the 1500's alarm bells start ringing. Georgina. |

I've just looked again, it is an entry submitted by a member of LDS. I also found another member of the family, Elizabeth, born 18th May 1626. I'm a bit green with this, what difference does being submitted make? Jim - thanks for your notes too. When I said Alias was a variant of Ellis, I only meant in the spelling - otherwise it wouldn't have come up. I'm very curious what this was all about npw, can anyone remind me what the original thread was? Duncan |

duncan As far as I can remember, the poster had come across conflicting information, which turned out to be culled from submitted records - so worthless, really. The are basically two kinds of records on the IGI, one is EXTRACTED records, the other is SUBMITTED records. The extracted records are transcriptions of actual parish registers and are as likely to be right or wrong as any other transcribed record. They do indicate however that the event really did take place, when and where they say it did. Still need to check it though. The SUBMITTED records are records submitted by members of the LDS church, in their religious duty to identify four generations of their ancestors. No one checks these submitted records for accuracy and many of them are sheer fabrications. I understand that members are told, if they cannot find their 3 x GGPs for instance, to make them up - god will know who they mean. It will be indicated on each individual record that it is either 'extracted' or submitted. If you cannot see the word extracted, on the page, then proceed with the utmost of caution, and if the word 'about' appears on the page, then ignore it completely - it means the submitter doesnt have a clue.
