Merchant Navy and Sailors - Help!

I have a couple of ancestors who served in the Merchant Navy and one who is listed just as a 'sailor'. I'd like to find out if any records are kept so I can find out more about them, but don't know where to start! If such records exist can anyone tell me where to look for them?! Thank you for any help you can offer! Carolyn. |

What time is this? If they served in either the First of Second world wars there may be records. I found my grandad's and his best mates (including photo's) in the Local studies section of Southampton Library. (they both lived & worked from Southampton) maggie |

There are a number of of ways of tracing people down even to their individual ships - what sort of of period in history are you looking at? |

Jane's referring to the National Archives' Documents Online. If they're there you can download them immediately for £3.50. |

I'm looking between about 1850 and 1950. There were two or three generations. I'll try the national archives site - I'm fairly new at this so forgive me if that was a really obvious thing to try! :o) Thanks! |
