Enlarging the image I think it is John Scholes.

Sorry Guys/Gals Had to rush off for a phone call, sorry about folio numbers I was reading direct off a hard copy!! I'll follow up the leads you've given me, I was looking thru Palliots and didn't think to look at IGI has I've never had any results in 12 months searching there. Kevin

It looks as if Sally was married previously and William is a son from that marriage, you need to look for a Schofled Scholes marriage. Jennifer

Kevin, can you post the full reference for the 1841, you have given only partial and I cannot see them.

Hello everyone, I'm a bit stuck trying to read a census return also, change of sons name. 1841 census for Royton, Oldham ref. HO/107/548/13 Downing St. Right hand page 2nd entry down. Can't make out first name Surname = Scholes age 60 Occ. Cotton Weaver. then Sally Scholes age 55 Richard Scholes 20 Ellen Scholes 15 Ann Scholes 15 William Schofield 25 Sarah Schofield 20 Looking at the above you would think 2 families living in same house the Scholes and the Schofields, howver when looking at the 1851 census for same address (107/2243) William Schofield is listed as Sally Scholes's son!! So apart from not knowing what Sally's husbands name was, I'm clueless to know why the son has changed his name. Any ideas on either question who be appreciated. Kevin
