Does anybody know what 107, Rice Lane Liverpool was? My grandfather died there in 1949, was it a hospital or just a home address? I did google it but all sorts came up! Anne-Marie.

I'll see if I can find out. I think it must be a long street because my 3xgreat grandma lived at number 486. Do you know if it might be in the Walton area?

It looks like quite a residential area from what I can see on Google Earth. It's on the A59, or near it, just after the point where the A59 crosses the A5058.

thanks for the replies. However, just checked his death certificate and I know it was not his home address. Hence, why I assummed it must of been a hospital maybe? At present, there is a hospital in Rice Lane named Walton Hospital I wonder if that was there in the 1940s, I think it maybe closed now though? Anne-Marie.

Walton Hospital was def. there in the 1940's and before, my Nan had her hysterectomy there in 1934. It was previously a workhouse. It closed a couple of years ago. Libby x

Hello Ann-Marie My grandmother also died at the same address in 1935. It wasn't her home address, which is listed separately on the death certificate. I know she died of meningitis. It was probably Walton Hospital or, if not, a sort of nursing home. As she had meningitis I expect she had to be quarantined.

Because of the great social stigma associated with Workhouse births and deaths, the Registrar General stopped putting the word 'workhouse' on certificates, in the early 1900s and merely put a street address. I was born in the old workhouse in Manchester (it was a hospital by the time of my birth) and my birth cert has only a street address for this hospital, such was the terror this place inspired so many years later.
