I have an ancestor who on the 1851 Census shows as a 'Pensioner 68 Regiment'. Two years earlier in 1849 on his daughters marriage certificate it states 'Chelsea Pensioner' Can anyone give me any information and in particularly where they were between 1820-1830. He was born in Hampshire and married in Ireland. Thank you.

Hi Chelsea pensioners were men who were attested by the army and either invalided out due to injury or served their service period...either way they were refered to chelsea pensioners and were either 'in' pensioners or 'out' pensioners... The chelsea pension files can be viewed at the national archives in Kew in the WO97 range, but some are online (see the end) at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk you can download them for £3.50 I believe. The documents are arranged in three series by date of discharge to pension: for the period 1760-1872 the documents are arranged alphabetically by name within regiment, including militia to 1854 (WO 97/1-1721); from 1873-1882 the documents are arranged alphabetically under cavalry, artillery, infantry and corps (WO 97/1722-2171); from 1883-1913 there is one alphabetical sequence for the entire army (WO 97/2172-6322). These are online For the period 1760-1854 (WO 97/1-1271) a name index has been produced in a joint project by the Friends of The National Archives and the Army Museums Ogilby Trust.

68th regiment was Durham Regiment of Foot. You could look at the regiments.org website to find out where they were on those dates, or the regiment might have a museum who could give you information. The fact that he was a Chelsea pensioner means that he received an Army pension. His service records will be at the National Archives in Kew.

It seems that he 68th regiment were the 68th Regiment of Foot Durham Light Infantry... there is a better forum for military matters, with people alot more qualified especially for deciphering the service papers that you will hopefully find www.1914-1918.net
