There is a place called Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire. It is a ruined abbey near Ripon. If you google it, it may help. Best Wishes Pat

Thankyou for that, i do know where it is but when i google 'fountains earth' for more info on the actual place, it just comes up with the school and a map, the school is a church school but cant find the church is it in fountains earth or outside of it? One of my ggreatgrandmas was born there in 1817 and im striggling to find her parents or siblings. thanks anyway, Sharmala.

This is the quote from GENUKI: 'FOUNTAINS EARTH, in the parish of Kirkbymalzeard, lower division of Claro. Pop. 441. This township is situated on the north side of the river Nidd, and extends from the top of Nidderdale, down to Lofthouse.' This means that it didn't have a Church; baptisms would have taken place in Kirkby Malzeard, about 6 miles to the east. The Registers are in the North Yorkshire Records Office. The IGI does not contain the years you want so you will need to consult the microfilms. There is now a nearer Church, St Mary's, Ramsgill, but that looks to be nineteenth century in date, probably later than you want. Regards Stan

After much searching we seem to have found it here: http://www.multimap*com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=412000.015803005&Y=473000.804814069&width=700&height=400&gride=411977.015803005&gridn=470919.804814069&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=freegaz&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&keepicon=true&zm=0&scale=25000&right.x=2&right.y=141 It seems to be more of an area than an actual village - certainly I've never come across it and I don't live that far away, having driven through the dales many a time. There is a Fountains Earth school in Lofthouse which is really the nearest village of any size to it. Next time I'm out that way I can have a proper look for you if you're that interested?
