Why would a marriage index be altered?

Thanks Rebecca, Deb & Pam. I will email the GRO and ask why it was altered, then probably order it anyway, but with a reference check. Diane

I'd order 3xgrandmother's cert using reference# quoted but put a cross reference check that husband's name is correct. If it's not the right cert, they'll only charge you 3 pounds for search and refund you 4 pounds.

I'm not sure why it would be changed but I would definitly ask for it to be checked when you request the certificate if you're unsure of any of the information.

You could contact the GRO and ask why it was altered.

When I looked up the marriage index image for my 3xgreat grandparents in the 4th quarter of 1837, my 3xg grandmothers entry is listed as Ann Millthorp Knareboro' Vol 23 Page 326, but in my 3xg grandfathers entry, William Halloways, the page number is crossed out and handwritten as 2811/S. Does anyone know what this could mean? Should I include a reference check when I order the certificate? Diane
