Always worth checking for wills, most unlikely people made them. Try National Archives documents on line for a starter.

The baptisms took place late Edwardian era. How wonderful to find such interesting info.... It doesnt surprise me one of my indirect ancestors kept marrying wealthy widows.

No, I dont think so - when I first came across it, again it was a single woman who had two kids by a wealthy older farmer (she went on to be the only one in my ag labs with lots of money and property! LOL - he kicked the bucket when she was still only in her twenties and she married another older guy who also snuffed it long before her - Im most grateful for her enterprise as she left a wonderful Will giving so much info re her siblings/spouses/their occupations/residences etc.). So I also thought that the private baptisms were due to embarrassment on the part of the farmer or the fact that they were illegitimate but I was assured that was not the case. And now Ive had a few years looking at baptisms for my lot and others I can see that illegitimate kids were baptised in church and a note made either kindly or rudely about the mother. I know you sometimes find entries where the kids are a bit older and are shown as entered in the church or some such. I have assumed (yes, NEVER assume!) that the kiddie had been privately baptised when sickly and then survived - hence cant be baptised again but there must have been some sort of service where they are accepted into the church. However, I just noted you say you couldnt find them in the birth index - are you talking after 1837? As you probably know it wasnt compulsory to register until 1875.

Heather Thank you for this! Explains why one of the children i couldnt find in the Births index I was wondering if it also was because my grandmother was born to a single women? kind Regards

Usually it means a child is poorly and not expected to live. However I have had them where the kiddie goes on to live to old age!

I have found that two baptisms were conducted in my family by Private Baptism. Have no idea what this means! Any one any ideas?
