Just a larger house than the average!! A detached house, in its own grounds (large or small), and probably with stabling. There would also be accommodation for servants. In other words, a house suitable for a gentleman to live in. In London, it might be a terraced house ........ but of the kind you would see in and around the squares of Belgravia or such like.

My grgrandmother was a servant in this house but trying to find owners --this is 1895 Ireland -the usual Irish brickwall!!! Ros

If you look at the glossies even today, you will see houses advertised for sale as 'gentlemen's residence'!! Means you have to be wealthy to a) buy it and b) maintain it!!!
