In 1797 he was a Husbandman,1816 a Labourer,1838 a Hatter as was his Son,then 1845 a Bread Baker. I am wanting to make sure I have the same person but I can't find another with the same name in Darlington |

Well, perhaps if you put up his details others could check it out. So going backwards, on the sons marriage cert? He is a baker? |

I could see husbandman and labourer as the same person .......... husbandman is basically a farm labourer. But then to become a hatter and then a baker?! That does seem strange. Both were very specialized jobs. Are you sure you do not have 3 different people? |

I know people worked harder than we do and work was more manual, but a bread baker in his mid 70's sounds hard. Seems a strange change of career |

Is John Bowbank c1803 on the 1841 - 1861 his son? Because he's a labourer. I find the idea of John snr being a hatter & a baker rather doubtful. |

Ozibird I havent found a son John,up to now all his children were born in Darlington,so if hes was born Darlington then it is a possibility. It is a mystery which is really bugging me,as i cannnot find another Bowbank family in Darlington thanks for your replies |

Hi - just wondering if you had ordered that 1840 death cert yet? If you were to get that it may help you in this part of your research because you would know whether your search for him ends in 1840 or whether he is still to be found in 1841 and onwards. If he did die in 1840, then in 1845 when his daughter married, she may simply have written down any occupation for her father - people didn't always tell the truth on certs, especially if she wanted to 'impress' someone. The same goes for the son who married - there's no guarantee that just because he wrote his father was a hat maker that this was necessarily the truth. Anyway, we could go on guessing but I think the death cert you found should be the next thing on your list - even if it is simply to cross that idea off and plod on with the searching. Regards Athena |
