As an ex mortlake road resident I find THIS site quite informative on Newham matters.......... http://apps.newham.gov.uk/Forums/localhistory/start.pl copy n paste as is it doesnt need stars or brackets...... its a local history forum.. there ARE records held but they are , I believe in stratford... Bob ps Jersey road is still there as are most of the old streets/sites.....BUT has been subject to so called improvement over the last few years... have a look on Google earth..... |

Helo Louise, Custom House was my old stamping ground and I knew Jersey Road quite well. I used to go to the school that is no longer there, Ashburton Road School which is on the Freemasons Road. Ahhhhh, memories. Kathlyn |

Is the birth cert clear as Savill ? Just wondering if it could be something like Gavill or Gavell Maureen |

Custom House is close to Canning Town in the East of London and would have been populated by dockworkers. |

Thanks for the reply. I can't find any record of marriage between JAMES THOMAS CHAPMAN and FLORENCE SAVILL. On my grandfathers birth cert mother is down as FLORENCE CHAPMAN, formerly SAVILL. But as I have found nothing I can only presume they didnt' marry and she was just using the name CHAPMAN. |

Custom House seems to be an area in London and Jersey Road still exists. Have you found the marrige of Florence and James? Sam x |

I am still searching for information on my Grandfathers parents (FLORENCE SAVILL and JAMES THOMAS CHAPMAN) on my grandfathers birth cert (b. 1912) it has the address as 64 Jersey Road, Custom House. JAMES THOMAS CHAPMAN evidently was a ships fireman. Are there any custom house records anywhere I could search to try and find any info? Many thanks |
