I have an unusual name for the south of the UK, in fact not many of us about, so I thought researching mu name would be a doddle. Oh no....we originate from the Lancashire area where it is as common as Smith, Brown etc. My problem is................Because my lot came from Kirkby and i understand it was a small communittee in the early/mid 1800s, I am pretty convinced that all the Mawdsley`s were related in some way. I have a list of the burials in the local churchyard which date from 1837 - 1875ish and a note of the West Derby deaths for the early 1860s. A route to go down to try and link these please. Kathlyn

In this situation, I make out an individual sheet for each person (scrap paper for working on). I then try to identify the individuals on the censuses. This usually produces some family groups. Then I go back a generation to Parish records and try to identify their parents, and so on - you may finish up with some strays of course, but usually it is fairly straightforward to go backwards in this way. Hi OC, I have started to do this with the church references I have. Unfortunately, Lancashire is too far away for me to visit, but I have this week joined the Lancashire Family History Society, so I hope I may get some help from them. I have a photo of my great grandmother, never knew her name and she has caused me no end of frustration....BUT, with perseverance I have sorted her out and managed to get back to her parents, and this is where I am at the moment. Thanks for your input. Kathlyn

Kathlyn I don't live anywhere near Lancashire either, which is where most of my ancestors come from. So I use my local LDS family history centre to view films of the original parish registers, which has meant I have my own one name study for all the Holdens in that village. Talking of one name studies - the Maudsley family may be the subject of a one name study - google GOONS to see. OC
