The stillborn register was started in 1927 (although even after this date some stillbirths were not recorded). Only the parents of stillborn children can access these registers, although if it can be proved that both parents are dead, then siblings can access the details. The registers are kept at the GRO in Southport. Kath. x

If the child took one independent breath, there should be both a birth and death registration. If the child was stillborn, and the event was after the introduction of the separate register, there are limitiations on who is allowed to access the info. Prior to the introduction of the stillbirths register, no records were kept. Also, stillborn babies were seldom given separate burials. They were included in the coffin of any person whose burial was imminent. This happened to my late sister-in-law's stillborn daughter in the late 1930's. Reg

remember stillborn registers have viewing restrictions but the associted burial record is open to anyone.

I have just found out that my Grandad had an older sister who died at birth. Does anyone know if child deaths at birth are recorded on either registery? Thanks
