A baby's surname is added to a birth cert these days (although admittedly not back then) and can be anything you want. It doesn't have to be anything to do with the parents' surnames. If a child is re-registered after a marriage, the surname can be changed but then only to that of the father, the mother, both combined, a family surname or a cultural surname. In this particular case, yes, it was purely down to a registrar's error. Jack |

If the name Pickin that has been crossed out is in the same column as her other names - i.e. Florence Emmeline, then that is a mistake as the surname should not be in the forename column. This is why it has been altered. A surname is not added to a birth certificate - only the child's first names and then the parents names seperately. Kath. x |

So would she still be Pickin? Why would her mother go back to registration office one month after registering the child to have Pickin taken off 2nd col?Do you think there could be a possibility that the baby wasn't that of the said father Albert Pickin? Just seems odd, but i suppose anythings possible. |

because Pickin is her surname and the second column should only show the christian names. If it wasnt corrected she would be Florence Emmeline Picken Picken |

Can anyone tell me why on my grandmothers birth cert it states her full name --Florence Emmeline Pickin, but the Pickin as been crossed out? Both Parents, Pickin Birth Cert says clerical error in column 2 corrected on the 10th Sept by Me A Mellish (Registrar) in the presence of E.R Pickin (Mother) On the Authority of the Registrar General. Florence Born 6th Jan 1901 Registered 10th Aug 1901. |
