I think the enumerator must have mixed up Eliza & Susan's place of birth on the 1861 census.... Births Jun 1853 (98%) JEWELL Susan Isle Of Wight 2b 443 Georgina.

His name was William Jewell b.1821 Clovelly. I don't think he married abroad as his wife, Catherine, also has Clovelly as her birth place. He did move about a bit. His first child was born in Preston, Lancs, the second the IOW, the third Northumberland and the next one Pembroke before they returned and settled in Taunton. Thanks for comments anyway.

I was going to suggest having a look at Familyrelatives.org at the army marriages, but the site is down and not sure what times they cover.

If he was a soldier he could have married abroad. Do you want to give us some names & birth years maybe we can help. Georgina.

He is not married in 1841. He is listed as a private soldier in Cumberland Square Barracks, Stoke Demerel, Devon. There are other families listed however. I have searched the records from 1840 through to 1854 with no luck so I assume he must have married within the confines of the Army but I have no idea how to check this record.

I am having no luck tracing the marriage of a chap who was a soldier. He was born in 1820 and was a soldier on the 41, 51, 61, 71 and 81 census's but I just cannot find his marriage. His first child was b.1850. Is it possible that he could have been married in the Soldier's Barracks by the Chaplain; where would I find such info. Thanks in anticipation.
