I never knew they dressed boys in dresses in those days! It is difficult to say as I can't see the child's face, but is wearing long socks or stockings, a checked skirt or dress, a fisherman's type jumper and a hat that is simalar to the hats the men are wearing. The child comes up to the man's waist but he looks a very short man compared with most of the other men, but I would say the child is much younger than 6, maybe it is his daughter Jane who would be 2. Just thought there may be a 4 year old. Update - sorry got that round the wrong way Henry would be the 2 year old and Jane the 6 year old

Are you sure it's a little girl? Might it be the Henry who was 8 in 1871 - they dressed boys in dresses when they were small:-)

Many thanks all, Yes the 1871census is the one. You got me a bit confused when the 1861census said son-in-law etc for the children. But now I see Sarah was a Patching obviously the older children had a different father, and the younger ones the surname was just an error on the census. And of course when John showed up as son-in-law on the 1871 census I had taken that as so and that Fanny must be their daughter - wrong!! Why couldn't they put step-children instead of in-law, very confusing. Still hasn't solved the little girl in the photo, maybe no relation at all but would think in a photo of loads of fishermen the one with his arms round a little girl would be her father. Thanks again

On the 1861 census in Brighton, can someone look up a Sarah Campbell born c1828 in Brighton, I don't believe her husband William will be there as I've been told he was at sea that night. She would have at least 2 children, Fanny born c1855 Brighton & Jane born 1858 Brighton. I am hoping another daughter shows up as I have William in a photo in 1864 with a young female child. Many thanks.
