Nicky if children were born out of wedlock & then the mother married the children usually took on her married name, when it was their turn to marry some married in the surname they had assumed & some married in their birth names, there was no hard & fast rule I'm afraid you just need to check every possability. Georgina. |

When children were born out of wedlock 1860s,1870s, and registered in the mothers surname, how would they have gone about changing the surname ,once the mother married? I have a few in my lot born before mother is married, and then they turn up on the 1881 census with the mothers new surname. Did they just assume the name or would it have to be done legally?. Also if they later married, which name would it have to be in? Any ideas anyone? your comments would be appreciated. Nicky |

It was/is possible to change name 'legally' after mother married by taking marriage cert along to Register office, then entry could be re-registered under that name but not sure this is/was widely known. To be sure you need to check under both surnames Ann |
