If someone on the IGI has only a mothers name. Does this definately mean they are illegitemate. Thanks. Margaret

It is a possibility you have to consider, but not definite proof. As has been said on her before, the IGI is a very useful source of information but can not always be guaranteed. If it is a parish extract you are looking at it is likely to be the most accurate, but otherwise the information is only as good as the submitter. You should always try and corroborate with another source.

Margaret if it says at the bottom of the entry 'extracted from a parish record' then it is slightly more reliable although it depends on the person who transcribed it. If it says 'submitted by an LDS member' then always double check the info as many mistakes have been noted. Georgina.
