My grandmother was born in Canterbury rd, old kent rd near New Cross gate, so I was told by my 85 yr old aunt, only I have searched numerous maps of the area and can't seem to find Canterbury rd. Does anyone know if Canterbury rd exist and if so would it come under Lewisham. I seem to be going around in circles. many thanks Cheryl

I can't help with regard to the existence - or not - of the road, but to verify the info, you could purchase the birth cert.......... Reg

well if its old Kent road then thats not that near to Lewisham. Lewisham is about 4.5 miles away Old Kent Road is just that, a road that winds its way back to New Cross Road then back to New Cross Gate , its one long road that changes name as it goes. New Cross gate is then about a mile from Lewisham. I cant see that Canterbury Street would be Old Kent road as well. It may have been a road off it tho altho its not showing now on the maps of the area. That area of South East London is an old area with lots of Victorian properties stll around. Like other places of london tho it did suffer badly in the blitz of WW2 so there was a lot of rebuilding done. I used to got to School at New Cross just up the road from New Cross Gate. As Reggie said your best bet would be to get the cert. Shirley

....No idea if this is the same Canterbury Road but I found this on the net.... ...the old Canterbury Road, Deptford is now called Ilderton Road and is between Peckham and Hatcham Park. Gwyn

Have you got grans birth certificate? My guess is that it was Canterbury Row or Terrace - the old kent road was so long that they would have narrowed down the areas by giving a further identification to say a dozen or 20 houses. My own GGF lived in Coopers Row, Old Kent Road. If you look at roads of Victorian terraces even now you will often see a wall plaque showing xxxxxxxxxxxxRow or xxxxxxxxTerrace for a block of houses. Get the cert.
