It is Stoke on Trent and I've made the same request twice before with no charge. As I said, I'm not even asking them to search, I've supplied the date of burial and grave number! I think I will try again for just one or two and use my mum's address and see what happens. Sam x |

Maybe it was the wrong person on the wrong day?! We had to try twice. We contacted the office again and sure enough they too gave us a photocopy of an ancient 'plot map' and were brilliant, really helpful. It proved the hinge point of finding the whole family. Maybe the clerk felt overwhelmed by the fact that they would have to work hard............? Maybe break it up into separate calls and then there's no charge? And there is a weird curiosity about perusing the headstones nearby in the cemetary, could any of us afford the huge granite tributes that furnish these older cemetaries?! Think not! Try again, maybe you'll get someone who is motivated! Jules |

Well, that is really steep. There are so many helpful people, what a shame the local cemetery charges so much. Armed with just a death date and probable cemetery in Wolverhampton we visited and were told the burial date, given a photo copy of the relevant plot in relation to the main paths, then a member of staff put on her coat and in the rain walked us over to the area so that we would be sure to find it. I've already seached the burial registers but this doesn't tell you whereabout in the cemetery the grave is. Will they let you search other records that will pinpoint a brave location? Sam x |

Sam Always worth asking if they would let you do a search personally, most will. regards Looby |

I have written to my local Cemeteries department to ask them to advise me of the location of some graves of my ancestors. I looked them all up in the burial indexes beforehand, supplied them with the place and date of burial and even the grave numbers. All I wanted to know was the location of that grave within the cemetery. (5 graves in total, some had more than one person in them). They have written back advising that there will be a £60 charge in view of the amount of work required!! It took me les than an hour to find them all in the burial registers and I had to search, at least I have provided them with all the details! I think this is extortionate, I have had this info in the past and never had to pay. Has anyone else had to pay for this info or is this a rip off? (I am not paying btw, I would rather spend a day trawling the cemetery!) Sam x |
