Which of those are older than your mother? On your mums birth certificate - where does it say she was born? |

So we have an Iris Gwendoline Coates marrying an Edward John Ryan sometime before December 1958. Do you know when her older bro/sister were born - the eldest one? And where? Right, Im taking the dog for a walk now - check in later to see if we got any info. |

Right - got you, all those people are your mums aunts and uncles. Why we wanted to know when mum was born and if she had any older siblings is because that hopefully will narrow down the likely date of your grandparents marriage. If someone can find that marriage you can then send off for the certificate and can get the names of your granparents fathers and their occupations. Do you know when your grandparents died and where? |

Well done Willow! Well, Willow has very kindly found the marriage reference for you. Right Lucy, you now have the reference you need to buy the marriage certificate of your grandparents - do you want to do that - it will cost £7. We can tell you how to do it online. |

Well I dont think we can do any more for you until you buy that certificate. We can tell you how to do it online - it will take about a week to get to you and then you can tell us the details you find on it for us to try and help with the next generation back. |

To order a certificate get on the GRO website (General Register Office). You will then need to enter the details about the event including the names, place, volume number and page as Willow found. The site is quite straightforward. They will charge £7 and it will probably take about 10 days for the certificate to arrive. Once you have that certificate, you will have the bride's father's name and father's occupation. You will also have the bride's age (hopefully...sometimes it just says full age which means over 21). You will then be able to search for the birth of the bride by working out her approx year of birth and her family on the censuses. Also you will have the groom's fathr's name and occupation. Witnesses to the marriage are often family members and so can also be very useful for cross checking purposes. |

This is where to order certificates - never use any other site - there are scams out there charging up to £25 a cert. http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ |
