The only real info I have is: According to John Hogans headstone he was born 1878 in Liverpool and died 1949 His marriage certificate states his father was Michael Hogan. He was married at St Josephs parish do not know if he was baptised there. No name for mother. I have tried applying for birth cert and have tried Lancashire BMD??? Anne-Marie

Hi Try another angle. On the 1881 Census, the only John Hogan born Liverpool in 1878 is listed as being 3 yrs old, parents Michael born Wales and Mary Ann born Birkenhead. Siblings Mary aged 5 John himself aged 3 Michael aged 1 Is this your family? Jan

I also thought you meant an archives records office - sorry. Where have you looked for the birth registration? Give us all the details you have for him.

Anne-Marie If Michael and Mary Ann are the correct family and assuming they married on the brides patch, I'd say that Michael Hogan married Mary Ann Welsh June qtr 1875 Birkenhead. You can search for free on FreeBmd, Jan

Have you discounted all this lot (freebmd?) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Mar 1877 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HOGAN John St. Olave 1d 275 HOGAN John Thomas Hartlepool 10a 158 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Sep 1877 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hogan John Liverpool 8b 76 Hogan John Liverpool 8b 10 Hogan John Liverpool 8b 180 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Dec 1877 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HOGAN John Chester le S. 10a 518 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Mar 1878 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HOGAN John Birkenhead 8a 510 HOGAN John Leeds 9b 433 HOGAN John Coventry 6d 534 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Jun 1878 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HOGAN John Joseph Blackburn 8e 492 HOGAN John Thomas Tynemouth 10b 176 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Sep 1878 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hogan John Thomas Manchester 8d 284 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Dec 1878 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hogan John W.Derby 8b 461 Hogan John Edward Sunderland 10a 589 (Wow, there was a glut in Liverpool in Sept 77!) If you are absolutely definite about the year being 1878 I guess the Birkenhead John or the West Derby John are the main contenders. My hubbys lot were all Liverpool and they have West Derby as the reg district.

You really do need to contact the library you are thinking of visiting. Some libraries do local studies and some don't. Within those that do, what they hold will differ from library to library and they won't have anything which isn't relevant to their area - so, for instance, I live in Harrogate and my local studies library (the central one in town) holds microfilm of some parish records from the Harrogate area as well as IGI records, newspapers from c 1860's onwards on film and other records all relating to Harrogate (maps etc). But I wouldn't find anything for say, Newcastle in my library or Liverpool or any other place apart from Harrogate. Contact them and find out what they have - you may also next to book a reader or computer before you go. You don't want a wasted journey!!

I was going to the library. I know my relative John Hogan was born 1878 in Liverpool but cannot obtain a birth certificate from the registrars office has I do not have a mothers name only father, I have tried twice. I guess I need to find a baptism but do not know which parish. I cannot go any further with my search until I find his birth so I can find out his mothers name. Guess I am stuck!

You won't find birth certificates if that's what you mean. You may be able to find a baptism record if you have an idea of which church the child is likely to have been baptised at. It won't give you the mother's maiden name though. Have you checked that the library holds the records you need - not all do - or do you mean you are going to the records Office? Sam x

Are you looking for pre 1837? Records offices hold parish records.

I am going to my local library and want to know do they have birth records there or do they just have baptism records? Silly question I know! Anne-Marie.
