I have been looking for my dead uncle thinking he was still alive, as I found him on search's I did born 1938, only to find out when I got his birth cert he was born in 1910 and registered in his mothers name then re-registered in1938 in his dads name, how many more have I messed up on, bet there are loads of us plonka's out there. Know the feeling well..... Found out after 18 months of hard research, that granddad was not a Maudesley at all, he was a Roberts.....So I should really be a Roberts!!!!!!! He took his mothers maiden name when he ran away from home as he did not get on with his stepfather. Could`nt you just murder them !!! lol lol Kathlyn

Gerri, I think you'd probably want to use her birth surname. That's the protocol. Rose

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 8 Mar 2007 23:37

My mum always said she was born 1908 and there was 13 months between her and dad. Dad was born Dec 1907. she even spun the tale that when she married in 1929 that she played her mum and dad off each other when she asked for permission to marry. she told her mum that dad said its alright with him if its alright with you/ Said the same to her Dad. Her marriage cert of 1929 carries on the myth. BUT when she died in 1980 and my elder sis registered her death i queried the age that she had given and she told me MUM was born in 1909 but said she was born in 1908 cos nan was pregnant with her when she married. BUT the thing is Nan and Grandad .who were both widowed, married in 1909 some 3 months before Mum was born prematurely, Mum was eight weeks early!!. and Mum had gone the wrong way in in dob trying to protect her mums name!! she should have said born 1910 not 1908 !! I got her birth cert and it confirmed she was born 1909. think mum told the tale so often she believed it herself Shirley

Hi Rose My Grandmother was born 23-6-1884. Her parents Emma Poole and Thomas Overs married 18-10-1885 16 month gap!... I'm not sure which name she should have in my tree now? Born Annie Matilda Poole? or Married as spinster Annie Matilda Overs? When the birth cert arrives, I'll post the details on here. Gerri x

She probably had no idea she was using the wrong name when she married. My friend's grandfather never could get a copy of his birth certificate. Years later my friend began her family tree but could find no registration for him under the name of Frederick Walter Randall. Eventually we found his sister in 1901 census, visiting with an aunt, named as Price, not Randall. Armed with that bit of info, we found grandad - registered as Frederick Walter R Price!! That also explained why friend could find no marr cert for grandad's parents. Jay

Gerri Been there, done that! Only in my cae it was my great grandmother...I had her date of birth from the family bible and her parents names so decided I could save three quid (as it was back then). Enthusiastically traced her family back centuries by visiting records offices, taking photos etc. Took about four years. Only to find that she was the SECOND wife of my GGF, and not the mother of any of his children. OC

Hi Gerri, I didn't send for my Grans birth certificate for ages as I knew her birthday , fathers name and mothers maiden name. Then I thought it would be nice to have so sent off for it. When it arrived it was the wrong birthdate. I did a bit more searching and found that Gran had a sister who had died and the same year she was born and Gran was given the same name. If I hadn't known her birthday was 31st May I would probably never have found that out. Linda
