Thinking I could access Ancestry CA, (I offered to help a cousin with her research into her Canadian relatives) unfortunately I now find that I can't. Initially, I'm looking for Bruce Seymour Cook. Born 1882, Sandy Point, Bay St. George, Newfoundland. Died 1936, Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Any help/advice, gratefully accepted. Thanks, M. Steer |

That province isn't covered on Ancestry censuses at all :( You could try this site... http://ngb.chebucto.org/index.html |

Newfoundland didn't become a province of Canada until 1949. Before that it was still a British colony. Margaret |

Thankyou, Tracy and Margaret. Tracy, the web site you gave is full of lots of information (if only my Geography was better). I now appreciate how difficult it must be for 'foreigners' (and I mean that in the nicest way) to trace their British ancestors. Margaret, you say Newfoundland wasn't a province of Canada until 1949, so where are/who has the records? M. Steer |

Thankyou all for your assistance - I've received a lot of useful leads. However, although I'm reasonably good at Geography, I don't know the electoral districts of Canada. Can anyone tell me which electoral district either Sandy Point, Bay St. George, Newfoundland or Corner Brook, Newfoundland is/was? Thanks again, M. Steer |

Both Bay St George and Cornerbrook are in the riding of Random-Burin-St George's. You can go to http://www.election.ca and click on the 'electoral districts' link to search for ridings (i.e., Canadian federal constituencies) in a variety of ways including looking at a pdf map of Canada. The riding covers the north-west corner of Newfoundland, Cornerbrook is two-thirds the way down the west coast, and Bay St George is further south, in the Stephenville area. The Bay St George Genealogical Society http://www3.nf.sympatico.ca/michele.doucette/ has a pic of Sandy Point on their homepage. Good luck. Malcolm |
