Does anyone know of a web site which lists old occupations and what they were about? I have a relation who was a cord wainer, whatever that was, an another who was a boot journeyman ( a rep possibly?)Thanks Sue |

A cordwainer is a boot maker!! Just a posh name! But you can google cordwainer, there is a site that gives info on old trades and professions. Chris |

Anyone who was a journeyman anything worked for somebody else as opposed to a master whatever who had his own business. Hope this makes sense:-) |

A journeyman is a tradesman or craftsman who has completed an apprenticeship. The word 'journeyman' comes from the French word journée, meaning the period of one day; this refers to his right to charge a fee for each day's work. He or she would normally be employed by a master craftsman, but would live apart and might have a family of his own. A journeyman could not employ others |
