I also looked at the Bentley family in 1861 and 1871. If you go back to 1851 census they do not have any children. The only child ever mentioned is Eli on 1861 and 1871 census. There is a possible marriage for Susannah Saville in Bradford in 1846. One of the possible grooms is Samuel Bentley. Is Susannah a sister of Martha and she adopted Eli. Maureen

Sorry i'm new to the message board thing so thankyou everyone for your help it is really appreciated. Eli 's 1st marriage was at manningham in june 1872. and in 1874 he was living ada street, saltaire, shipley. Just can't understand him not being on 1861/71 census is a mystery. will follow all the leads given and let you all know the outcome. thankyou.

Hi If the William and Martha are the ones with son Abraham in 1851, then William had died before 1861, as Abraham was living as step-son with John and Martha TYAS. In 1871 they are indexed as SYAS. Eli is not with them in either year. He must be incorrectly indexed, or just missed out. Di

I would bet that this m.cert would show Martha as a widow, late Murgatroyd, formerly Saville, but you could get the GRO to check that.

Not convinced that the 1851,1861 and 1871 families are the right ones. Joseph, Abraham and Eli can all be found on the 1881 Maureen

Maureen, the 1851 family you list must be correct, because it lists the father-in-law as Mr Saville, and that was Martha's maiden name. So I would think that the others are also correct, and it looks like Martha remarried before 1871 to a Mr Syas. alison

Hi Sarah, A way of tracing is to choose a name of a neighbour of the parents and go through 1861 village then 1871 could be he was visiting a neighbour at the time of the census, or staying with another section of the family who could have spelled his name wrong??? Rod

I'm looking up Eli Murgatroyd b.1853 Brighouse (my ggggrandad). I have found him in census 1881/91/1901. but cannot find him in any previous ones. i obtained his wedding certificates as he was married twice. and one of his eldest sons samuel (b.1874 ada street, saltaire, shipley).birth cert.also Eli's birth cert. which names parents as william and martha savile. found a william murgatroyd and martha 1851 census but thats it have come to a stabdstill and need advise what to do next? any ideas, anyone please get in touch. p.s cant find wedding date either for william and martha.
