Hi I'm trying to find a marriage for John Coyle and Jane Donelly/O'Connell/Donaldson possibly in Wigtownshire, Scotland. First child I know of is born 1851. John Coyle consistently gives his place of birth as Ireland, she gives her birthplace as Wigtown. My grandfather was a registrar and he had a friend who was a Catholic minister in Wigtown - this friend apparently found baptisms for the children in the parish records. However this was a very long time ago - any ideas how I find and verify this for myself? Scotlands People doesn't seem to mention Catholic notations as such. thanks in advance Bridie

Hi The Old Parish Registers (OPRs) on Scotlandspeople are only those of the Established Church, although SP are in dicussion with the Catholic Church about adding Catholic records. Catholic parish records are kept at the Catholic Archives in Edinburgh (Columba House?), and there are copies at National Archives of Scotland (NAS). I don't think either are indexed. Denis

Sorry for the delay in replying. Life gets in the way of this hobby sometimes! Thank you Denis. I will have to plan a trip to Edinburgh one day. It's unfortunate that in my granddad's day there were no photocopiers or digital cameras for those old Wigtownshire records. Georgina - that's the family! I've got them tracked on the 1861, 1871 and some of them on 1891, but before then or a marriage would be great. I think it leads me to Edinburgh to search for catholic marriages in Wigtownshire. I would love to know more about either side.

Hi Bridie, The birth of Agnes Coyle is on Scotlands People OPR's, she was born on the 12th Novemberin 1855, it say the parents were married in Wigtown in 1850 and that they already had three other children when Agnes was born, a boy and two girls. I can't find this marriage,birth also lists grandfathers name on mothers side George O'Donnell as informant. Bridie Just found this thread and I know the very people who can help. They have access to everything Scottish and I'm sure will have access to Catholic marriage records. Its a free site although for £10 a year they will do priority lookups and give expert advice. Its different from this site and complememtents a lot of what is available here, there are loads of us who are on both sites. If you need to find something Scottish its the site for you. Wow what a response! Betty Boo thank for the pm which alerted me to further replies to this thread after I had hit the sack last night. I'm glad you managed to find one of the births. My direct line is a different sibling however. I don't yet have any Scottish birth certificates so wasn't aware parents marriage details are on the cert. I will use my Scotlandspeople sub later this evening to see what else I can find. Val - I have been trying to find the births. Hope you have luck put in Coyle then both and try with out area and see how many show up then put in area and see how many turn up do a 10 yr search from 1855 to 65 and see what shows

Just thought I'd update this thread! Helena - I have now applied to join the moonfruit site and also the scotfamtree forumer. Hopefully the moderators will accept that I'm a reasonable human being, lol.
