Hi If you know the date and place of grandmothers birth, why don't you ask the local record office - they don't work off the GRO indexes, so you don't need vol and page, just the date and name. Usually they don't charge if its not the correct record, or if they cannot find it. Also ask for sisters birth entry. Some entries have been missed in the GRO index, there's a whole book about the problems with the GRO indexes - I have one Christopher Henry Carver I cannot find, but there is an entry for Christopher Henry Drake, in the same quarter and registry office, and I think the indexer has transposed a surname. It not a close enough relative to need to get the birth cert, so I am still wondering !! I know freebmd is not complete yet, but you could try searching by first name and registration district only. Hi My uncle mentioned a aunt at my dads funeral recently, and she was born march 1911 and my nan jan 1912 bit close but possible. He did say he heard a rumor that there aunt was actully there mums mother but that would be close as my dad was born 1942.Also i have looked from 1901 until 1930 and the surname is quite unusual so there are not that many even over 20 yrs. joy

There could only have been 12 months at the most between these two girls - what quarter is the sister registered in? Do you have personal knowledge that the sister existed? Have you also looked a few years either side, in case she added a few years for marriage purposes, or lost a few for vanity! OC
