Wakefield jail records - 1851.

Thankyou Keith & Rutland, I'll certainly give them a ring tomorrow. Thinking about the Quarter Sessions records - whatever foul deed he commited, might have been commited in Wakefield, so I guess I might have to search both towns!

Hi Stu Prison records for Wakefield prison are held at the Wakefield headquarters of the West Yorkshire Archive service (google for address). They MAY tell you why he was committed if they have the relevant years. The Quarter session records will tell you why he was committed, these may be available at the records office that covers the Stockton district. You may also find, if you are lucky, trial reports in the local papers of the time.

An ancestor of mine, John Robinson, was in Wakefield Jail at the time of the 1851 census (HO107/2372 Folio 527 Page 12). He was born in Stockton on Tees in 1831 and at the time of the census he was described as a labourer (at least I think that's what it says) but he eventually became an accountant with a rather nice house back home in Stockton. Can some kind person suggest how I can discover why he was in jail.
