The names of the murderers were John Wealans and Robert Wealans, their friend's surname was Rutherford. The man they killed was a Marshall of Bygate Hall and Blaidybur, Whether he was a Marshall as in some sort of official or had the surname Marshall is not clear. Robert is the the one who escaped to Ireland, John and his friend got their pardon through a Mr. Clennel. This is supposed to have happened in 1749 in the border region of Northumberland. If anyone can point me in the most likely direction of where info might be kept to confirm the event I would be very grateful. Moira.

Sorry to butt in on your thread Moira but I wanted to ask Gail for the web address for the Northumberland site. I tried a google search + looked a couple of sites but couldn't find the 'search facility'. Many thanks Ann

The Association of Northumberland Local History Societies has a search facility and if you put in 'Murder' it brings up - HIGH SPEN (Winlaton) murder at (45) pp 79 - 83. So some kind of article in their magazine. It may refer to the same incident - but further googling I think it is an incident in the 1860's............ Gail. x

On RootsWeb I found a story about two of my ancestors. About 1749 (reputedly on Christmas Day) they got into a quarrel with another family while poaching. They killed a man. One of them fled to Ireland, the other along with a friend was tried, found guilty but pardoned on appeal. All this happened in the Alwinton/Harbottle Peels area of Northumberland. Where do I look for sources to confirm this? And where are they likely to be held? I am hoping one of the many experts on this board can give me a steer. Thanks, Moira.
