Hi Can you help me with an occupation on the 1841 census. I think he is my 5x great Grandfather. His sons marriage certificate in 1840 shows what appears to be the same address but on the marriage certiticate it says he is a miller. The occupation on the censuses appears to be DRYSTON. I have tried searching this on different sites and looked on some websites that list old occuaptions but dont seem to some up with anything like it. It is the occupation of William Clare living in Warrington born in 1781 The 1841 refrence is: HO107/521/11 Folio: 21 Page: 35 Any ideas on what the occupation is would really help in confirming if this is the correct William or not. Thanks a lot Karen |

I would assume he was a Drystone waller Dry Stone Waller / Dry Stane Dyker (Scottish) Builds walls with stones from the fields. The art involves no mortar or cutting, but the ability to see where the stones should fit. Served the dual purpose of disposing of the stones from the fields and building the boundary walls Roy |
