Hi. I am trying to figure out the child of William and Mary Harwood in 1841 (HO107/707/3/40/26). The transcript says Jas aged about 9 months. Is this child supposed to be in the male or female column? I am unsure whether it is supposed to be a boy or a girl. He/She is not on the 1851 census with William. I had a look at FreeBMD and found a ''Heli James Harwood'' registered for Shoreditch, Middlesex. Have not heard that name before......any suggestions????

Roy, I am trying to figure out if it was transcribed properly - it doesn't look like Jas to me.

I think the bit before the name Harwood is crossed out so there is only a surname, and in the age column it says 'one month' and then after that 'not christened'. I imagine they hadn't named him or her (can't decide whether it is a girl or boy). Kath. x

I'm not sure what is says.... but I don't see it as Jas. The detail about the age is in the female column... but it's anyone's guess. Could you chase up a possible baptism after that date, as they seem to be indicating that the child was not christened at the time of the census.? Gwyn

(Sorry for the delay - had to reset my computer) I thought the notation was that the month wasn't clear (as in 1 or 9). They could be crossing the initial before the surname. I've been looking on the Records board to see if I can find someone who is going to GuildHall (I think that is where they keep the records for St Leonards) to see if they can check for baptisms for me. It could also be possible that the birth wasn't registered before the census as well, so I need to check for births after then. There is a Mary listed in 1840 Shoreditch as well, and that is the mother's name - may have to check that one out.
