Might be a generation thing. I had an Uncle Son, when I asked him if it was his real name he said it was. When he died I found out his name was Henry. Then a couple of years later his sister, my Aunt Babs, also died. Turned out her name was Florence!!! So it might be worth interpreting Lil as Christian name unknown!!!! Duncan

Just had a thought, Lil could have been a pet name. One of my grandfather's sisters is called Dinah by the family but is actually called Ivron (no middle name) and I use to be called Fan-Ann and but it bares no resemblance to my actuall name.

Gwyneth will ask mum tomorrow if Aunt Lil was actually an Aunt you could be right on that one. Thanks everyone for giving me some clues, why did our ancestors do these things! but its all fun isnt it. Much appreciated Yvonne x

My Grandfather has caused me no end of trouble. He was registered as TOM He appears on the censuses as Thomas and married as William Thomas. Very helpful.

Your mother may have thought of her as an aunt....but she might not have been in the strictest sense. My mother often referred to Aunt Martha, who I couldn't fit into the family as I had accounted for all the siblings (and wives) of her parents. She turned out to be the wife of an elderly distant cousin. Gwyn

I had a great aunt called Aunt Liz....I only found out after she died her name was Margaret Elizabeth. My dads sister was known as Aunt Floss.......Found out years after she died her name was Eva...she was called Floss as a nickname because of her love of Candy Floss. Granddads father he insisted, was plain TOM and that appears on all the census, but he was baptised Thomas. Kathlyn

Thanks for the info, but dont think its any of those names. According to mum, her Mother had a Aunt Lil on her mothers side, but there isnt a Lil in any of the family, could it be possible that it was also short for Elizabeth? Regards Yvonne
